How Filtered Social Media Photos Can Affect Body Image

The following is excerpted from an online article posted by Psychology Today.

A recent study from Radboud University in the Netherlands explored the negative influence manipulated social media pictures had on adolescent girls’ body image.

The research revealed:

  • Thin bodies presented in the media can have a negative effect on female body image perception.
  • Girls exposed to manipulated Instagram photos reported lower levels of body satisfaction.
  • Girls who compared themselves with others had lower body image scores in comparison to girls who didn’t compare themselves to others.

The results of this study implied that the recent societal concern about the effects of manipulated photos in social media might be justified, especially for adolescent girls with a higher social comparison tendency.

The peer-reviewed study was published in the journal Media Psychology.
